Students Share Summer Plans as School Year Comes to an End

Summer is full of potential. Students plan their summers as soon as the last one ends. Plans include taking road trips, traveling across the world, staying at home and seeing new movies, spending all day at the pool, or just sleeping every chance you get. Students and teachers have worked to ensure that assignments get in and papers get graded before anyone is allowed to dart out the doors.

Taking a small road trip to Chicago, or even another city in Missouri with our family or friends could be the perfect way to let go of all the stress this last year could have piled on, but students don’t have to go far from home to have fun this break.

“I really want to go on road trips with friends and do things that I’m going to remember,” said junior Katie Wisniewski.

“I don’t have any plans yet on going anywhere, but hopefully [I] make a few trips to the lake,” said sophomore Jayme Bertish.

Sleeping in seems to be the biggest plus of summer days, but also just having the freedom to go places and enjoy the activities students don’t normally have time for during school.

“My favorite part about summer is getting to sleep in and not have a set schedule for the things I want to do,” said Wisniewski.

“My favorite part is that I can sleep in, hang out with friends, and [that] it’s baseball season,” said Bertish.

Although summer schedules can be busy, the warmth and stress free feeling of summer makes tasks seem to fly by. Even teachers can enjoy this time off. Art teacher Clint Johnson teaches summer school for five weeks with a one week break, and then goes right into football camp.

“I like to get projects done at home. Last year, [I] redid the front porch, this year [I will be] painting the back of the house. Summer is a lot more so it’s easier to get things done,” said Johnson.

This summer, summer school will begin on June 6, and continue until July 1, for high school students. After these students get a break completely from school, they can enjoy activities such as going to the lake or finding cool ice cream shops or even just taking the dog for a walk any time of the day. Since summer means the days are longer so students will be getting outside, having bonfires just as it gets dark, or playing sport as the temperature cools down.

Inevitably summer has to come to an end and all Parkway schools will resume on Aug. 10. Although students have more time for activities and fun, it’s important to remember assignments that might be given over break to ensure a good start to the next school year. Don’t fret about school resuming too fast though, get out and enjoy the weather and free time.
