The Parkway North varsity soccer team began their 2016 season with a win, 4-1, against Lutheran Saint Charles on Aug. 20. Despite having eight new members and nine returning members to the team, the team hopes to improve last year’s record of 5 wins, 16 losses, and 2 ties.

One player to help accomplish this is defensive player and senior Duke White, who is playing on the team for the first time this year. “One of the team’s strengths is working well together,” said White.

White hopes to help the team by “being a positive impact” on the team.

Even though the team has many new members, including White, they have been working well together with 3 wins, 4 loses, and 1 tie so far this season.

Another new player is junior Kyle Cronin who is “creative and exciting,” according to coach and English teacher Dave Beck.

Besides new players working together, experienced players have also been helping improve the team.

Defensive player and midfielder junior Henok Moges has been playing soccer since second grade and has been on the varsity team since his sophomore year.

Moges believes the team has strength despite their “short temper” and hopes to bring leadership to the team since there are so many new players and “leadership is important.”

One of the reasons why the team is doing better is because they learn something new each season and face challenges together.

Beck said he hopes the team will continue “learning from each game to be competitive in districts and conference.”

He also hopes that this year the team will have a “better chemistry and build themselves an identity.”

The team continues to work together to improve by practicing everyday after school. Practices consists of conditioning and running drills.

Beck hopes this season will help players “to play and build their confidence, to be passionate about the sport, and to be able to approach any challenge in life with confidence ”.

The team will participate in the Parkway Tournament at Parkway North on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. and Sept. 17 beginning at 10 a.m.
