Students walk in and out of the North library on a daily basis. Some will study on couches or chairs, some will type away at the computers, and some will check out books. The library is a room many students take for granted; however, the library would not be the helpful, organized place it is without our librarians. Maybe they’re helping a class or organizing books around the library. Maybe they’re helping an individual student or checking out books. They work hard, but sometimes they go unnoticed. On April 12, their work will be acknowledged for Library Worker’ Day.

Eve Diel has been working for eight years at North as one of our librarians. Her favorite thing about working in the library is “having lots of students in here every day, and also lots of teachers bringing their classes in. It’s really fun to help them with their research, and their projects, and with technology.”

Diel has always been interested in education. Both of her parents and her grandfather were teachers.

“My parents were both educators. They were both teachers, and so was my grandfather, so education has always been with my family,” said Diel.

She decided though that she didn’t want to be part of her family line of teachers. She got inspiration from her work study job working at the library to become a librarian herself.

There are lots of different ways that Diel helps out, from recommending different types of books students should read to teaching about databases to helping students use technology. Diel is also involved with the school community outside of the library including being a member of Gateway 2 Change, running the Book Battles, and being a member of the Professional Learning Team.

Diel stays busy outside of school as well and enjoys playing tennis with friends and going to plays. She is also a member of a handbell choir.

Diel appreciates Chris Johnston, the other librarian here at North, since they have been working together for years.

“We both came in at the same time at Parkway, so we got to know each other through new teacher activities,” said Diel.

Johnston has worked at North for 13 years and decided to become a librarian because she “loves working with books…and working with computers, kids, and teachers,” Johnston said.

Her favorite part of working at the North library is “helping  [students] find what they enjoy reading, and working with them and helping them learn how to do research.”

Besides helping out in the library, Johnston also helps the school community outside of the library by sponsoring the prom committee, running the Book Battles, and being a member of the Building Leadership Team.

In her free time, she enjoys traveling, knitting, and babysitting her grandkids. She is also a member of an investment club.

So today, or really any day of the school year, remember to thank our two librarians who work hard to make our library great here at school.
