Dungeons and Dragons Gains Popularity at North

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis year, Parkway North added a new non-school sponsored club called Dungeons and Dragons. Players of Dungeons and Dragons pick an imaginary character and play their role, whether it’s a wizard, a dragon, a monster, or a hero.

“You pretend to be a character in a fantasy world,” said junior Austin Lacy, who played the game last year.

The game comes in a few forms including a board game; however, they do have an online version which people can play against or with other people. The students at North play the board game version because it’s “more interactive, and everyone can participate and have fun” said senior Milo Brucker, who is one of the founders.

“It is a game of your imagination. Whether it’s part acting, part storytelling, part social interaction, part war game, or part dice rolling, everyone gets involved,” said Brucker.

There are characters to set up on the board, along with a large castle and other small houses and dice.

“The Dungeon Master sets up the monsters and traps, while the other characters, like the wizard or knight, prepare for battle,” said Lacy.

One player is the Dungeon Master (DM). The DM controls the monsters and enemies, narrates the action of the game, controls the game, and sets up the adventure. Together, the Dungeon Master and the players make the game come alive.

Since it is a role playing game, anyone can join the club – as long as they have made up a character.

“Kevin Baker and I started playing it a couple months ago and have got more people involved”, said Brucker.

The club meets at one of the player’s houses or any place where they can hang out, eat, and enjoy the game.

Dungeons and Dragons is growing throughout North and allows students to be creative and use their imagination. One can join the club by contacting either senior Milo Brucker or Kevin Baker for more details.
