Students Prepare for Finals

As finals approach, students are beginning to go back and look over concepts learned at the beginning of the year.  It can be a challenge to remember things learned throughout the semester, but   key study skills can be useful in trying to recall information and doing well on finals.

“When I take notes, I highlight things that are important.  A lot of people say color helps you to remember key terms and helps to organize your thoughts,” said freshman Kailey Brown.

Students who are visual learners can benefit from color coding notes, study guides, and other study materials.  For some people, colors are easier to remember than words or phrases, and attaching a color to a specific piece of information can make remembering that information easier for some students.

“[Doing] work a second time around is a good refresher of that material.  Also any review material given out by teachers is good study material,” said math teacher Kyle Escontrias.

Many teachers hand out review work and even study guides for students to reference.  These are all useful to study because they give students a general idea of what will be on the final exam.

“I revise and go over my notes [before finals], then read my notes during commercials,” said sophomore Imran Chaudhry.

Some students find it hard to carve out time to study with the holidays coming up.  However, studying for small bursts of time has proven to be more effective than studying over a long period.  Using commercial breaks or car rides to study is a great way to create time and prepare for the exams.

“[Just] figure out what kind of learner you are, study that way, and you’ll be in great shape for finals,” said sophomore Kristen Von Till.
