With over 1200 high school students, one might expect our campus to be pretty filthy. It is important, however, to take pride in the appearance of North, and to keep the campus clean.

School beautification sessions allow students to participate in the upkeep needed to keep the school clean through a variety of projects and earn community service hours. Many students use the opportunity to fulfill community service hours required for the A+ program, National Honors Society, or Government.

Junior Panashe Majachani, who has participated in a few of the sessions said, “I get to be outdoors, and it’s good to help the school as well because then they don’t have to pay people to beautify the school…It’s a good experience.”

School beautification sessions consist of a variety of different projects, both inside and outside the building.

Dr. Jenny Marquart, who organizes the sessions, said school beautification entails “a variety of things. Mostly, when we’re working outside, we’re picking up trash, weeding different areas, or maybe spreading mulch to different areas. If we’re working inside, then it may be cleaning up trash, or wiping off walls, or wiping off door handles and sterilizing the banisters on the steps to prevent the spread of different germs.”

The school beautification sessions is a way for students to gain insight and perspective as to how to be an active member in a community. Through being a part of a clean-up initiative at school, students have a greater understanding of the importance of taking part in other initiatives.

Dr. Marquart said, “I think it is important for students to see what it takes to keep the campus looking nice, and I think that it helps them feel a part of, a sense of giving to the community.”

The next scheduled school beautification is Wednesday, Oct. 29 at 2:45-5:00 p.m.

If students are interested in participating, they should “just show up,” said Dr. Marquart. “Come outside my office, whenever the dates are scheduled, and I will lead them there, and based on the number of students, we will decide if we all work together, or if we go to different places and spread out.”
