Spirit Week Kicks Off 2014 Homecoming

The weekend of homecoming begins on Friday, Sept. 19 with the school-wide pep rally, pancake dinner, and soccer game. The next day will be celebrated with the Homecoming Parade, football game, and dance. But before homecoming weekend, student government has planned a spirit week to build excitement and school spirit.

To kick off spirit week, Monday’s theme will be Disney Pixar.

“For Disney day, if you like Frozen, wear a Frozen t-shirt. Or you could dress up as a character. I’m going to dress up as one of the Incredibles,” said senior Auburn Meister.

Search your closets for your old summer camp gear, because Tuesday is Tie-Dye Day. This theme has sometimes in the past been called Wacky Tacky day, and students have taken it to the extreme.

“One time somebody came in tie-dye everything. They had a tie-dye shirt, tie-dye shorts, tie-dye shoes, tie-dye bandana, tie-dye everything. The person was covered in tie-dye. That was hysterical,” said student government sponsor Bob McKitrick.

While Western Wednesday is fairly self-explanatory, there has been some confusion over 90s Day on Thursday. In initial announcements for spirit week, Thursday was Preppy Day. However, the theme was changed because its potential to offend.

“[Student government] didn’t want to create a situation where we were maybe boxing in a group of students, people who wear name brand everything, whatever that type of person is. [We] didn’t want to have a day where the implication may be that we are making fun of them,” said McKitrick.

But even if your Preppy Day outfit was already picked out, McKitrick suggests an easy way to find 90s ideas.

“When I sent the email to the staff, I said to check the panoramic pictures in the hallway by the library for some inspiration. I graduated high school in ‘95, so I get to dress how I did in high school,” said McKitrick.

To get spirits high for the pep rally and uphold tradition, Friday will be Purple Pride Day.

“In the 40 years that we’ve had our school, the Friday of spirit week has always been school spirit day. It’s a concept that’s expanded a little bit. The band used to play in the commons on that Friday before school, now it’s expanded, and we do it before every home game,” said McKitrick.

If students would like to get involved in the parade floats for their grade, float building will be every day this week from 3 p.m to 8 p.m. by the climbing tower in the staff parking lot.
