Parkway North’s Softball Team Goes to State

softball 1The Parkway North’s girls varsity softball played in the State Championships for the first time in the school’s history on Oct. 25, 2013. The team placed 4th overall due to the coaches and team members hard work.

“It was really cool because there were about 108 teams competing and we got 4th place overall,” said junior Sara Stevens, 1st base.

Coach Amy Doyle came into Parkway North a couple years ago from Marquette High School to help coach Brett Katz who was already coaching softball at North.

“We practiced every day we didn’t play; it was a lot of basic infield, mechanics and basics, and we were taught how to be level headed for certain situations in the game,” said sophomore Ria Smith, catcher.

The coaches worked the team really hard in order to do well at State, even though staying after school every day to practice isn’t fun, the team bonded and go closer together.

“We practiced every day since the middle of summer, and it was a long time but it was worth it,” Stevens said.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, the varsity team beat Hazelwood West 6-1 which led them to play against Fort Zumwalt North on Saturday, Oct. 19 which they won 5-3 in 8 extra innings. On Oct. 25, North’s team played two schools including Lee’s Summit and Eureka. They unfortunately lost to both teams but placed 4th overall.

“We were upset that we didn’t win but grateful for what we got,” said Stevens.

With everyone’s hard work and effort, the team was able to make school’s history. Now that softball is over, the team waits until next year to hopefully come back and win State Championships.
