Parkway North Students Start a New BBC Club

British Broadcasting Company of America has taken over cable. At Parkway North, students have begun a new BBC club where students can discuss the shows that they enjoy.

“We like to talk about various shows; we talk about how certain things were done in them,” said vice president of BBC Club sophomore Kyra Derington.

Finding a place to fit in at school can be difficult, but finding a club with people who have the same interest makes things easier. The BBC club is a way for students to connect with each other about a common topic.

“We discuss the film, fan culture, and how they relate to each other,” said sophomore Katie Pautler.

“What I like about BBC club is that I meet new people and discuss shows that I enjoy,” said Pautler.

The group discusses various shows that appear on BBC America including the critically acclaimed Sherlock. Sherlock is a British television crime drama that presents a contemporary adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories.

“I decided to join BBC club because my friend started it, and I like a lot of BBC shows,” said Pautler.

Another show that the BBC club watches is Merlin. Merlin is a fantasy based drama on the legend of King Arthur and Merlin. Another show that the BBC club will be watching is Doctor Who. The show depicts the adventures of the Doctor, a Time Lord—a time-travelling humanoid alien.

“We have had one meeting [so far]. We watched the show Merlin and discussed the show,” said Derington.

Like most groups that are made, the BBC club is more about making friends rather than activity itself. BBC club lets students discuss the topics that they think is important but also have place to talk friends.

“To have a place where we can all come together and talk about what happening in the shows, also the point of the BBC club is to find new friends that enjoy BBC shows,” said Derington.

The club meets on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in  room 2608.
