North Students Celebrate Valentine’s Day in a Variety of Ways

Junior Nate Steesma and senior Olivia Ellman plan to go to Gian-Tony’s, an Italian restaurant, for their date night tonight. “I hope Valentine’s Day will be as good as it was last year. My boyfriend says he’s got something planned but he hasn’t told me anything about it yet.” said Hacker.

When we were little, we celebrated Valentine’s Day in elementary school by handing out cards to everyone so that we could spread our love to everyone we know. Now, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in a variety of ways. Whether it be going out with a special someone such as your parents, friends, or significant other to dinner, the movies, or anywhere else, today is a day to remember how much you love and care for that person.

“Last year, I wasn’t able to go out, so that Valentine’s Day kind of sucked. I just took care of myself that day. This year, I’m going out to dinner with [my boyfriend] Alex,” said junior Jennifer McGee.

Although Valentine’s Day is a holiday to spend time with your significant other, it’s not always celebrated that way. Some people use it as a day to pamper themselves. Maybe it’s time to plan a spa day or take that warm bath you’ve always wanted and forget about everything that stresses you out.

Sometimes Valentine’s Day isn’t spent doing something romantic; instead people do things with people they love in other ways.

“Last year, Mr. Kramer and I didn’t really do anything romantic. We spent the day at Chuck E Cheese’s for Calvin’s [my son] Valentine’s party. It was fun planning it out and seeing him run around and have a good time,” said science teacher Mrs. Kramer

“I spent the day with my mom last [Valentine’s Day]. We bought a lot of chocolate, and we cooked food together that day. I don’t remember what I made, but it was my first time making something from scratch. It was really fun because I could see that my mom was really happy about what I was doing. At the end of the night, we just tried to finish a lot of the chocolate while watching some of her favorite movies,” said sophomore Alec McCarthy.

Cooking for that special someone is popular among North students. The feeling of being taken care of and knowing that someone wants the best for you is always heartwarming and will be something that’ll never get old.

“My Valentine’s Days always involved a lot of food for some reason. Robert [my boyfriend] cooked for me last year. He made a chicken alfredo, a baked potato with a whole bunch of good stuff in it, and a smoothie. I was really happy when I was eating it because it’s nice to know that someone cares about you so much that they want to take time to feed you. It kind of reminds me of the love a parent has for a kid,” said senior Hannah Ghidey.

Trying something new together is a great idea too because you’ll both have a lot of fun experiencing new things for the first time together.

“My boyfriend and I tried ice skating for the first time last [Valentine’s Day]. It was probably some of the most fun I’ve had, and it’s because it’s something we’ve never done before. We kept falling and tried to catch each other. We were horrible at it. We couldn’t stop laughing, though, and that was why I still remember it well,” said senior Natalie Hacker.

Today is a wonderful day to express your love to someone you feel is deserving of it. It could be your boyfriend or girlfriend, your parents, a pet, or yourself.

“I don’t have anything planned for this year‘s [Valentine’s Day] because that day is the first day that my baby will be able to come at any time. Hopefully, I’ll have something nice planned, but this baby is keeping me busy all the time,” said Kramer.
