On Feb. 27, girls track and field, girls lacrosse, girls soccer, boys baseball, boys golf, boys tennis, boys track and field, and boys volleyball and coed water polo began try-outs practicing for the spring sports season.

Some students are participating in spring sports because they love the sport in which they participate.

Sophomore Julia Jones is playing girls lacrosse because “it’s really fun and it’s a hard sport to play. I like the challenge, and my friends play it too so that makes it even more fun,” said Jones. The first game of the season is March 25 vs. Parkway Central.

While some students are playing specific sports for fun, other students are participating to better themselves for future sports.

Freshman Nathan Radomyslsky is playing baseball to prepare and train for football season. “[I want to play baseball] because my coach told me I had to play a sport,” said Radomyslsky. Radomyslsky decided to play baseball as a way to stay in shape for the future football season.

Freshman Sam Barry is participating in boys track this season to prepare for soccer in the fall. “I chose track because I’m trying to work on my speed and endurance for soccer,” said Barry. Barry has not yet been placed in varsity or junior varsity.

Both track and soccer require participants to run without many breaks in the action. “I coach the distant boys track so just the guys who run 400, 800, 1600, 3200 so like the mile, two mile, stuff like that,” said track coach Carter Snow. The first boys track meet will be a junior varsity game vs McCluer North, April 4. “[Track] is a lot like cross country, it’s just a different form of competition because we are running around in circles and always turning left. Training is very similar but all the guys are pretty much the same. It’s a good group of guys who want to work hard and challenge themselves everyday,” said Snow.

Other activities during practice help students strengthen their skills so they are prepared for the games.

Radomyslsky said, “In baseball practice, we go into the batting cage and one of the coaches throws balls at us and we hit them.” The first baseball game of the season will be a varsity and junior varsity games held at 4:15 p.m. March 20 vs. St. Charles.

“[In baseball practice] we warm up and stretch,” said Radomyslsky.

As students prepare for their first games of the season, they have different goals in mind, but all train hard.
