The hair, makeup, dress, tuxedos, and flowers. Students at Parkway North spent lots of money to celebrate prom night on May 6 at the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel.

“I did spend a lot of money. I had to have a deposit down for my dress, the deposit was like $200 and the other half of the deposit was another $200. Then, I bought shoes and accessories, but my hair and makeup was free because my mom is a makeup artist,” said senior Damita Williams.

Finding the perfect dress or tuxedo can be hard. Walking in and out of multiple stores looking for something different but also something that fits your style can be tough. Some students started looking for prom fits as early as the beginning of second semester and others at the very last minute.

“I started shopping in February, and it took me about a week,” said junior Israel Lewis.

As for senior Daijha Wilkes it took her “a good month” to be ready for prom.

Every year, a live band instead of a DJ plays at prom, which students seem to question.

“We’ve always had a band. For as long as I’ve been here, there’s been a band even before I had prom. It was deemed that prom is a more formal event and that a band creates more of a formal feel than a DJ and so we keep with that,” said Becky Bright who has been on the North prom committee for four years.

Many students weren’t too excited about the live band but still tried their best to enjoy their night.

“It was fun. It was one of those situations where you try to make the best out of it. A lot of people were mad that we had a band, but you just get out there and dance and make it fun,” said Williams.

The theme of the evening was Moroccan Nights and was held at the Sheraton Westport Plaza Hotel from 7-11 p.m.

“My favorite part of the night, I guess when I first entered, it’s between when I first entered or around the time when I left, so like the first time I entered the reactions that everybody made when I entered was like she came up, she glowed up so I felt really you know accomplished,” said junior Maya Nick.
