Color Guard Hopes to Improve Scores, Technique with New Members

Color Guard PhotoThe Parkway North Color Guard held try-outs for the 2013-2014 season on Monday, April 22 and hopes are high for the coming season with six new members who auditioned.

Try-outs began with clinics on April 10, 15, and 17 where new members learned basic flag and dance skills and started meeting the returning members.

“I think this year will be really good because we have a lot of new members and everyone has been working hard,” said sophomore Lindsey Potts, who has been on the Color Guard for years.

The guard lost two graduating seniors this year, but the other seven members will be returning for the next season. In addition, freshman Evan Pierce as well as five other eight graders made the team, creating one of the largest guards Parkway North has had in over four years.

“I’m going to miss [the seniors] a lot,” Potts said. “But I’m expecting a lot of time and practicing with new members and, hopefully, we will receive higher scores this year.”

Last year, the color guard went through a minor staff change when they brought in Sarah Knue as a new coach. The guard was successful at competitions last year and with Knue returning, the team plans to make this year even better.

“Guard should continue to grow and improve this year over last,” color guard sponsor Laura Glenn said. “Any time we have the same drill writer and guard writer continue on, the more we improve as returning members already know what their expectations will be and those writing for us have a better idea of the skill set of our members.”

With thirteen members this year, the Parkway North Color Guard aims to improve their scores, their technique, and make this season the best the team has seen yet.
