Chess Club Continues Success

On Saturday Dec. 3, 2011, Parkway North’s Chess team placed 2nd in the 2011 Gateway Chess League Board Tournament. They were only a half point away from taking first.
“Getting 2nd place was a nice acknowledgment of the guys work so far this year but really a bit disappointing given our potential,” said Chess Club coach Adam Stiller.
Not only did the team take 2nd place overall, but many members got individual awards on their “board” in chess.  Vishal Bharadwaj took 3rd place on board 1, Tristan Jappa took 3rd place on board 2, Kevin Deng took 1st on board 3, Isaac Pearlstone took 2nd on board 4, and Ketul Patel took 4th on board 4.
Sophomore member Kevin Deng said, “I should have tried harder on my last game because if I would have won then my team would have taken first, so I have mixed feelings about how I did.”
Last year, the North Chess team placed 3rd in the State Competition. The State Tournament this year will be on March 10, 2012.
“I think we’re going to win 1st in State this year, I can guarantee it because we have a lot more talented team than last year. If we work hard, then we will definitely win 1st,” said senior member Vishal Bharadwaj.
Their next match is Dec. 14 at Westminster.
