Captains Council Raises Money to Benefit Joplin

This week, the boys and girls freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity basketball teams from all four Parkway high schools will be competing in the Gerald Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.  The tournament will take place at all four high schools on different nights this week with the first games starting at 5:30 p.m.
All of the Captains’ Councils from Parkway schools are sponsoring the tournament and are working together to raise money for tornado victims in Joplin, Missouri.  At the first game that spectators are present, if they donate $10 toward Joplin activities, they will receive a t-shirt and will be permitted free admission to every game for the remainder of the tournament.
“The idea came from Parkway Drug Free Council groups who lead the Captains’ Council students in each of the four high schools,” said Drug Free Council and Captains’ Council sponsor Kris Kellams.  “As a district, they felt we should have a unified community service project and felt we should do something to help Joplin,” said Kellams.
Due to logistical problems, the t-shirts that were supposed to be handed out on Monday, Nov. 28 at Parkway North where the first game will be held, have not yet arrived, and each student who donates $10 will receive a voucher, and at any following game they may receive the available t-shirts.
“It stinks that we won’t get the t-shirts right away, but the money is going somewhere productive.  In the end, we still get the t-shirts, so nothing’s really harmed,” said junior Hannah Hoffman.
With the support provided by all four Parkway schools, students and representatives from Captains’ Council and Drug Free Council are hoping to raise a significant amount of money for Joplin activities.
