Students Enjoy Super Bowl XLVI

For the third year in a row, the Super Bowl set a record as the most-watched television show in the history of the United States.

The Nilsen Company, a global marketing and advertising research corporation headquartered in New York City, estimated that over 111.3 million people watched the game last Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, as the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots 21-17.

Even though Parkway North students tuned in to watch the Super Bowl, they also carried out annual traditions and tuned in for other entertainment as well.

“Every year, my mom prepares chili and we have family and close friends over for the game,” said junior Ian Brown.

According to USA Today, chicken wings have emerged as the most popular game-day food in the United States, with pizza following as a close second.

“I usually cook finger foods and have lots of people over,” said junior Dallas Richardson. “I was rooting for the Giants this year. I was happy to see a repeat [from the 2007 Super Bowl].”

For those not particularly interested in the game, commercials and the halftime performance from Madonna kept interest high.

“My brother and dad actually pay attention, but I just tune in for the commercials,” said junior Rebecca Dyer. “The halftime show was okay. I’m a Nicki Manaj fan, so that was cool. I knew two of the three songs Madonna did, except for the new one.”

The commercials, which cost companies over $3 million dollars for a thirty-second slot, once again did not disappoint students at North.

“The commercials were funny as usual,” added Brown. “But it’s amazing how much companies will pay to get their ad played during the Super Bowl.”

The Super Bowl has emerged as the top television event in the world, offering everyone more than just sports entertainment in various outlets.
