Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers Compete in 2011 Superbowl
There is no glory for a football team greater than the glory of being named the best football team in the world, and each winter a new team is crowned with this title. Dating back to 1967, 18 different teams have won the Super Bowl, and this year on Feb. 6, a new champion will be crowned, when the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers travel to Dallas to play in the Super Bowl.
In the Super Bowl era, since 1967, the Steelers have won an NFL-best six Super Bowls, and the Packers have won three.
It is definite that there will be a new champion this year because the defending champion New Orleans Saints team got defeated in the first round of the playoffs by the Seattle Seahawks. There is controversy about how Seattle got into the playoffs with a 7-9 record, as they became the first team ever to make the playoffs with a losing record. Since the Seahawks won their division, they had home field advantage in their first round game against the Saints.
“I think that since they won the division, they should get into the playoffs, since they worked so hard to win,” said junior Kevin Munie. “However, I don’t think they should get home field. That should go to the team with the best record.”
According to The Huffington Post, at the beginning of the playoffs the Pittsburgh Steelers had 11/2 odds to win the Super Bowl, and the Green Bay Packers had 12/1 odds. Now, right before the game, the Packers are favored by two-and-a-half points over the Steelers.
“I think the Packers will win the Super Bowl,” said junior AJ Arellano. “Green Bay is such a versatile team and they’ve shown resilience by overcoming injuries throughout the season.”
“The Steelers are going to win. They have been to the Super Bowl recently, their defense is tenacious, and defense wins championships,” said English teacher Dave Beck.
