Students Choose Between Official Prom, “People’s Prom”

pnh vs peoples promEvery year, high schools across the United States create proms which signify one of the last times seniors will be able to celebrate with friends. However, this year, a group of seniors came together and decided to organize their own prom named the “People’s Prom” which is set to be held on the same day and at the same time as North’s prom.

“[We put together our own prom] because we were tired of voicing our opinions and nothing being changed,” said senior Willie Parks. “So we decided it’s 2013 and it’s time to make our own prom.”

The People’s Prom will cost $45/person as compared to PNH Prom which tickets cost $65/person.

“Our prom is going to be between $5,000 and $7,000 so that’s why we charge [students] less [money],” Parks said.

With there being two proms held on the same night, this raises concerns with North’s administration.

“[With two proms on the same night], it’s going to be very divided for the senior class,” said principal Dr. Jenny Marquart. “People will be pressured to go to a certain prom. There is a lot of planning that goes into PNH’s prom, and I cannot guarantee the safety of students [at the People’s Prom.]”

With prom being such a big event for the upperclassmen at North, many students as well as faculty members put lots of work into planning it.

English teacher Heather Fleming, who helps plan the official prom said, “Prom takes approximately 4-6 months to plan and on average, we spend between $25,000 and $30,000.”

Not only the administration but students as well have their own concerns with having an option of two different proms.

Senior Camille Neal said, “I don’t think there will be a division in the class. I just think it’s giving people a choice they shouldn’t have to make. I’m going to whichever prom everyone is going to, but I plan on going to the school’s prom.”

As spring rolls around, and students prepare for prom, they will not only be able to choose their dresses and tuxes, but also which prom they would like to attend as well.
