Parkway North Student Government Sponsors Hat Day

On Sept. 21, 2011, the student government at Parkway North sponsored a hat day to raise funds for the Friends of Kids with Cancer foundation. Students who wished to wear a hat during school had to pay one dollar as they walked through the school’s doors in the morning.
The event was popular among many students, including senior Rage Ellis, who said, “I was asked by a student government member if I wanted to buy a sticker to be able to wear a hat for hat day. I responded, ‘Sure, why not?’”
While walking through the halls, students could see many of their fellow classmates sporting hats that they are normally not allowed to wear at school.
“Anthony Henderson (student body president) came up with the idea,” said junior Emma Guller, who serves as the student body secretary. “I think it’s important to give back and help other less fortunate people in our community, especially if it’s something that’s cheap, simple, and fun. I don’t see why anyone shouldn’t participate and help out.”
The money collected by the Student Government will go directly to the Friends of Kids with Cancer foundation, which is headquartered right here in Saint Louis and has been serving the St. Louis area for more than 19 years.
Junior Scott Mayberry was one of the many students who took part in the fundraiser. He found out about the event by the posters hung up all around school.
The goal of the Friends of Kids with Cancer foundation is to help the educational, emotional, and recreational needs of kids in our area that have cancer.
“I like the idea of raising money for charity. It’s a fun idea,” Mayberry said.
The fundraiser allowed students at Parkway North to bend the rules for one day, and in the process, have fun and raise money to brighten the days of many cancer patients in our community.
