Parkway North Holds First Career Fair

From 7p.m. until 8:30p.m. on Monday, March 5, Parkway North held its first Career Fair in the commons for students from any of the five Parkway High Schools. Professionals with careers varying in six different general fields were present to meet with students inquiring about their futures.

“This year we are trying to bring more careers that students are really interested in,” said Guidance Secretary LaToya Barry. “Most of the careers that we have, like the physical therapists, we got those ideas from students because we heard that that’s what they want” rather than having only mainstream careers that most people generally think of.

Career Fairs allow students who have a good idea about what they want to devote the rest of their lives and students who have no idea. The point behind the career fair is to give students a chance to explore different ideas without actually spending more time and money in college dabbling for years on end.

“I think [the] career fair will help students get an idea before they declare their major. It gives us a chance to look and ask questions before we go to college and make our decision on our major,” said junior Abbie Gutmann.

With over 65 professionals attending and speaking at North’s Career Fair, students had plenty of options to explore various careers from dancing to digital design.

“We’ll have a zoo keeper, a specific physical therapist. So, I think it will be more direct this year,” said Barry.

The professionals who attended the fair come from all over the area.

“They are volunteers, they’re parents, they’re previous alumni. Some of them are current teachers as well,” said Barry.

With most high school students graduating and then planning on attending college, the Career Fair offered a nice outlet to link education to a newly discovered career.

For students interested in attending the Fair; no registration or RSVP is necessary.
