North’s Girls’ Swim Team Prepares for State
On Feb. 17-18, the girl’s swim team will compete in the State competition held at the Recreation Complex in St. Peters.
The State team will consist of the swimmers who have attained qualifying times throughout the season.
“The last chance for swimmers to qualify for State is at conferences when people normally swim their fastest. The State team will be determined after conferences,” said senior Taylor Voelker.
Some of the State team consists of junior Heather Lundstrom and senior Claire Bassi, who have already reached their qualifying times.
“Jan. 31 was our senior night and last home meet. I was really excited to make the state cut in front of our home crowd,” said Bassi.
Last year, the team took fourth place at State, the best finish in Parkway North history.
“Since last year we took fourth in State I’ll be really excited if we get a top 3 finish this year,” said Bassi.
Coach Bart Prosser prepares his team for State by making sure they are rested.
“We begin out taper, which is a decrease in yardage over a number of days. It’s to get the swimmers more rest so they’re ready [for the State Competition],” said Prosser.
Last year, North was represented at State by 10 total qualifiers, including two divers and eight swimmers.
“All of our qualifiers from last year will be returning this year so I think we could do very well, better than last year,” said Voelker.
