North’s Cappella Groups Perform in Regionals

On March 10, both of Parkway North’s A Cappella groups, Men’s Room and Powder Room, will be traveling to Dekalb, Illinois to perform in the Midwest Regional A Cappella Competition held by the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) which features 11 schools from Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

“I think the competition will be a good opportunity to see how we’ve progressed as a group over the course of the year,” said senior Scott Hodnefield.

This will be the second year in a row that both groups will compete in Dekalb.  Last year at the competition, Powder Room came in second place and then senior Deonna Cortez won an award for best vocal percussionist at the competition.  Men’s Room did not place at the competition last year but have been working hard to improve.

“Getting second place was surprising and rewarding because it was really nice to see our hard work and effort pay off,” said junior Erica Roux.

Both Men’s Room and Powder Room have been practicing several times a week in order to prepare for the competition, coming to school early to rehearse.

“We usually have two rehearsals a week at 6:30 a.m. but as the competition approaches we’ll add on more practices,” said Roux.

The competition doesn’t just provide an opportunity to showcase both group’s musical talent, but it gives them a chance to view other groups and compare

“I’m looking forward to seeing some healthy competition so that we can see how we compare to other schools and groups,” said Hodnefield.

Win or lose, the a cappella competition looks to be a great gathering place for young singers and musicians.
