North’s Athletes Prepare for a Successful Spring Season

As spring sports approach, officially beginning Feb. 25, this is the perfect time for students to get ready for the season ahead.

“I am running and playing softball, and I am going to start going to the workouts,” said sophomore Cassidy Taggart who will play lacrosse this spring time.

Some people have been training a lot longer than the past few months in preparations for spring sports.

“It started the summer of 2012, I ran everyday in preparation for cross country which is the sport I use to stay in shape for track.”

Some coaches offer optional practices preseason and open gyms on Wednesday from 6 to 7 pm. allowing athletes to get a head start.  The weight room is also open most days after school to condition for any sport.

“After cross country, I run a little less than usual and expand on speed and strength work which is needed for sprinting.  I also try to get my flexibility back because it takes a lot of that for hurdling” said senior Derek Allen who runs track in the spring.

According to Velocity Sports Performance, putting in dedication year round is the best for an athlete and the greatest opportunity for success.

Velocity sports states on their website: “The question isn’t should an athlete engage in physical training but instead how much time is appropriate to devote towards improving ones speed, strength, and ability?”

Outside sport complexes offer several clinics and camps, to help an athlete get ready for any sport. For instance, Vetta Sports holds many clinics for soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse.

“I think the lacrosse clinic was really helpful because it helped me get conditioned for the spring season. Also, it helped me brush up on my skills so that I will be prepared for lacrosse,” said sophomore Eesha Sebherwal.

The clinics will help learn new skills, be refreshed about the rules and the game of the sport. As well as getting back in shape. Clinics mainly focus on the game of the sport and playing rather than lecture.

“I liked the clinic because it was fun getting to know people from other teams, and learn how they play. I also loved spending more time with my teammates from North,” said Sebherwal.
