North Holds Second Annual African American Celebration

In honor of Black History Month, Parkway North held its second annual African American History Celebration on Feb. 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the theater. This event celebrated African American history, as well as all of the diverse cultures of Parkway North.

Senior Julisa Powell came up with the idea when she felt that North needed to celebrate Black History Month, so she took it upon herself to organize something. She brought the idea to math teacher Joshlyn Harris, and they both agreed that the African American Celebration was a good idea.
“There were guest speakers and talented performances held in the theatre along with refreshments and class projects in the commons. It was exciting, entertaining, and insightful,” said Powell.

The talent show being held is going to focus on many aspects of not just the history, but African American culture as well. Julisa felt that there wasn’t enough of a focus on the culture and history and therefore wanted to make them the highlight of the night.
“I felt that there was nothing celebrating Black History Month, so I took it upon myself to organize something,” Powell said.
