North Catering Club Wins Parkway Gingerbread House Contest

On Dec. 8, the North High Catering Club won 1st place in the Parkway Gingerbread Competition.
Students in Prostart III, who are also a part of the Catering Club, decided to engage in this competition to show off their baking skills and holiday spirit. The theme of the competition was movies and the catering club at North decided to create their house’ based off of the Christmas movie Elf.
To qualify for the competition, each group had to complete a registration form and donate $5. Then, they had to create an edible house. If the house was not edible, then it was automatically be disqualified.
“We didn’t actually eat the finished house; we left all the materials out for about three weeks so no one wanted to eat it,” said senior Morgan Jansson.
Different schools and groups brought the gingerbread houses to Parkway South High School from 6:00-7:30 p.m. for the competition. The Culinary Mentor class also had five entries in the competition.
The gingerbread house that the Catering Club made way mostly made up of other materials besides actual gingerbread. “We used rice krispy treats [and] icing, fondant, gum paste,” said senior Paige Gratzer, who helped make the winning cake.
People voted on the best house and ate cookies, drank hot chocolate, and engaged in conversation while they were viewing the houses. The houses were then raffled off at the teacher’s luncheon.
“We put out cups for each of the houses, so they could put their name in if they wanted to take one home,” said Gratzer.
All the proceeds will be donated to Fezzi Fund which helps Parkway families in need.
