North Celebrates Homecoming with Spirit Week

Every year, Parkway North celebrates Homecoming with a parade through the neighborhood. Before the weekend festivities, students will celebrate at school with Spirit Week which will take place Tuesday, Sept. 18 – Friday, Sept. 21 this year.
Every year, Parkway North celebrates Homecoming beginning with Spirit Week, which includes themed dress-up days. Usually, it lasts from Monday to Friday, but this year, Spirit Week will take place from Tuesday to Friday due to the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah on Monday.
“[We excluded Monday because] we didn’t want to appear insensitive,” said student government sponsor Bob McKitrick. “We wanted to make sure everyone could participate.”
Although Monday will not be a part of Spirit Week, Homecoming activities will not be affected. Usually, Monday is used for planning the rest of the week, so few activities will be behind.
“In 2005, Spirit Week was the week of Labor Day,” said McKitrick.
So despite the delay, McKitrick assures the students of Parkway North that Spirit Week will run smoothly. Tuesday will kick off the week with Dress Like a Teacher day.
“I’m excited [for Dress Like a Teacher day],” said sophomore Kemi Ola. “Last year, I wore a dress shirt and tie and black pants. It was really fun.”
Wednesday will be Ugly Sweater day and Thursday will be Superhero day in which students will dress up as their grade level superhero. Freshmen are Superman, sophomores are Captain America, juniors are Spiderman, and seniors are batman.
“The Superhero day is my favorite,” said senior Jaime Schuval. “It’s interesting what people dress up as.”
Friday is Purple Pride day, when students wear purple and Parkway North spirit wear.
“Friday is usually the day where everyone brings their school spirit,” said freshman class vice president Joey Goldman.
Spirit week may be shortened, but it still will include all of the students’ favorite activities.
“I always like Spirit Week,” said student government sponsor Bob McKitrick. “I think it’s a great opportunity for each student to show how proud they are of their school.”
