Local High Schools Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month
High schools, like Parkway North, showed their support by hosting a football game on Oct. 7, in which a portion of the proceeds went to the P.I.N.K breast cancer awareness organization. Playing for P.I.N.K was one of the ways in which North shows their support of breast cancer awareness month, but for the first time the girl’s field hockey team has decided to show their support by organizing their very own Playing for P.I.N.K. game on Oct. 11 at 4:00 p.m.
“For the first time, myself and fellow captains Erica Roux and Maddie Edgerley have decided that field hockey will have a Playing for P.I.N.K. game to show our support of breast cancer awareness. I think this is an excellent way to connect with each other, our opponents, fans, and officials to come together as one on this special game day,” said senior Shawna Lawson.
Support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month renders importance to all students, whether they have personal ties to a breast cancer fighter or not.
“Although I am fortunate enough to not be personally affected by it, I believe in celebrating it because it affects not only the person who has cancer, but the people who love them. So, we need to show our support and show that they’re not alone,” said junior Da-In Eom.
Students like senior Jennifer Gfeller want to stress the importance of raising awareness for cancer and understanding just how life changing early detection awareness can be.
“I try to make people aware of it and [convey] how important early detection is because it really can save someone’s life. The more people are aware of breast cancer and the benefits of early detection, hopefully, the more lives will be saved,” said Gfeller.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings students together for a beneficial, common cause.
“As a community we come together and work as a team, to fight breast cancer. We look out for one another, we can raise awareness and show our support to our neighbors who battle breast cancer,” said Lawson.
