Indoor Soccer Picks Up Steam at Parkway North
This winter, indoor soccer has risen in popularity among students here at Parkway North. Vetta Sportsdome has become a place of gathering for many fans of the indoor soccer team Skinz, North’s unofficial team.
“I like going to the games because they’re really fun. The crowd is always interesting and funny. We usually make a lot of jokes and then the actual games are pretty exciting too,” said junior Rogelio Bonilla.
Although the team has been around for a few years, it is only now that fans have been showing up in large crowds for the games.
“I think we started getting more fans because we had a few people show up at the end of last year and they realized how fun the games are. Then they told their friends about it, and it just kind of spread from there,” said team captain Brendan Hellebusch. “The fans this year are really devoted too. They even have fan shirts. It definitely gives us more motivation to look over and see a lot of people cheering you on.”
Indoor soccer games have a different atmosphere to them compared to school sponsored sports at North.
“The spirit of indoor is different because it’s based on a strange competiveness. It’s not a competitive atmosphere; it’s mainly just for fun. This is why we have different team names. We’re Skinz this year, and we were the Business Cats last year,” said Hellebusch.
Anytime students are bored on a Friday or Saturday night, the indoor soccer games are a great way to spend some time.
