High School Heroes Look for New Members

Applications to be 2010-2011 High School Heroes will be available in Julie McMullen’s room sometime this October.
Former High School Hero Luke Graham said, “I feel it is important to teach middle school students the effects of smoking because the age of tobacco use is getting younger all of the time.”
The focus for High School Heroes is to inform sixth grade students at Northeast Middle School of the dangers of smoking before they try it.
“Our hope is to open the middle-shoolers’ eyes up to the long term effects of smoking seeing as most teenagers can’t see past the day they are currently on,” said sponsor McMullen.
High School Heroes take an all day training course, as well as going to the middle school twice a year and teaching a class on the effects of smoking.  As for the selection process, McMullen will be looking for around 24 sophomores.  The selections are based off of the content and presentation of the applications as well as teacher feedback and grades.
“My favorite part of High School Heroes is teaching the kids and having them look up to you,” Graham said.
The biggest criteria to be a High School Hero is a pledge to lead safe and drug free lifestyle.
