Girls Swim Team Places First at Cape Girardeau

The Parkway North girls swim team took first place at the Cape Girardeau Invitational this past weekend, and looks to continue their strong season.
“We also got first in the Parkway Quad and the Summit Invitational,” said sophomore Maggie Roderick. This is the second year in a row that North has won the Parkway Quad, which is between all four of the Parkway schools.
In the Parkway Quad, North placed first with a score of 364, followed by Central with 348, South with 351, and West with 331.
“Parkway Central is one of the only two teams that have beaten us this year, so when we beat them in the Parkway Quad it was good to avenge our loss from earlier in the year,” said Roderick.
The team also has had many personal successes, as individuals from Parkway North rank in the top ten in every single one of the individual events: the freestyle, the backstroke, the breaststroke, and the butterfly, all at various lengths. These individuals include sophomore Heather Lundstrom, juniors Taylor Voelker, Dyana Schneider, Erin Weinstein, Amanda Stadermann, Natalie Gray, and Clare Bassi.
Lundstrom is one of the best swimmers in the area, shown by the fact that she is currently among the area leaders in six events, and has the area’s best time for the 100m butterfly, at 58.67 seconds. She holds school records for the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m freestyle and 500m freestyle and is part of two relay teams, the 200m medley and 400m freestyle, which both hold school records.
“[I think] Heather is so good because she tries really hard at practice and she’s very dedicated,” said junior Courtney Clark.
North has impressed in singular matches this year, winning almost all of their meets against opposing schools, with wins over Parkway South, 119-83; Eureka, 133-53; and Pattonville, 144-42.
The team looks to continue their success into the State meet and through the end of the season.
