Girls Lacrosse Prepares for a New, Competitive Season
This week, the tryouts for the fourth season of girl’s lacrosse at North took place. This season is expected to be the best yet with an improvement last season to 6-9 from a 2010 season of 5-12.
“This is our fourth year,” said lacrosse coach Sara Robertson. “We started with a small group, and each year we get more girls and each year we increase our number of wins.”
This year should be no exception. With about 70 girls trying out, there will be more players to choose from to make the best team possible.
“We’ve built a lot in the last few seasons,” said Robertson. “We’re hoping to be very competitive this year.”
Forty-four girls will make the team with one cut already occurring last Friday.
“We’ll do a lot better this year because we’re working a lot harder and there’s loads of girls,” said sophomore Kimberly Williams.
Spring sports are also a great way to stay healthy. Lacrosse players spend practice running, doing drills, and sprinting every day after school.
“It’s a lot harder than last year,” said Williams. “There’s a lot more running.”
During practice, the athletes practice drills that work on individual skills such as cradling, cutting, and running.
“As freshmen, we aren’t sure which [drills] will be more beneficial, but the seniors are pros,” said freshmen Alexis Becker. “[Upperclassmen]’s skills are much better. It’s like their sticks are an extension of their arms or something.”
Aside from the health benefits, lacrosse also has a large social aspect.
“You build good friendships with your teammates,” said Williams.
The first game for varsity lacrosse will be on March 27 at home against Clayton. It is expected to be the start of a very successful season.
