Citizens Cast their Vote

On Nov. 6, 2012, Missouri citizens came to Parkway North High as early as 4:00 a.m. to vote. The line started from inside the lower gym and stretched to outside the school parking lot.

With having so many citizens coming out to vote, the students of Parkway North were asked to reframe from driving to school due to the heavy traffic of Election Day.

“It was hard finding a parking spot that day, I just parked in someone else’s spot,” said senior Tamez Amerson.

Citizens of Missouri whocame out to vote felt like it was their duty to exercise their rights. “I came out to vote because I think that we are lucky to have the opportunity and I feel like it’s my responsibility,” said chemistry teacher James Richman.

While people who were 18 and up game out to vote, Parkway North High held a “Kids Voting” in the library so that the students whoweren’t able to vote would be able to have the experience of voting even though they weren’t of age.

“I really enjoyed the kid voting it gave us a feel that we were able to make a change,” said junior Chelsea Thomas.

Later that night on Nov 6, 2012, after all of the counting of the votes of the Missouri Citizens, the electoral votes from Missouri went to the Republican candidate, Mitt Romney. However, Barack Obama received the majority of the electoral votes in the United States to become the president in 2013, serving his second term.

“The outcome of the election was somewhat predictable because Obama would help the middle class people because there’s more people of the middle class than the rich and Obama wants to meet those needs for them.” said junior Jacquelyn Harris.

Of the 890 students who participated in the “Kids Voting”, 596 voted for Obama which differed from the adults in Missouri who voted but agreed with the overall election.
