Various Tennis Clubs Offer Discounts for Parkway Students

Junior Luis Schneegans practices tennis in preparation for the first tennis match of the season against Parkway West on March 20.

Starting in 2018, many tennis clubs in the area are offering exclusive discount clinics for both Parkway North and Central students. Spots for solo and group clinics fill up quickly, so it’s important to sign up as soon as possible.

“There’s a lot of benefits of going to tennis clinics. The student clinics are fairly consistent cost-wise. Even more so now, since the student discounts [the clinics] offers are now available to North and Central students. If you play tennis right now, you are not allowed to join the clinics so these offers are really for those hoping to start playing or if you’re getting ready for the next season” said tennis coach Ron Lefcoart.

Many tennis clubs in the area such as Creve Coeur Racquet Club, Forest Lake Tennis Club, and Frontenac Racquet have began to offer exclusive discounts for students. Previously, student discounts were only offered in the Ladue area.

“I went to [the tennis clinics] at Forest Lake Tennis Club. I started before sophomore year and I go every winter so that I’m ready to play in the Spring. I only went for about a month because the clinics were kind of expensive. I had to pay around $90 for four weeks of clinics. The student discounts are exciting because I’ll probably be able to go to the clinics longer since they aren’t as expensive now” said junior Joseph Kang.

Tennis is not a sport that requires intense workouts in order to have good technique and have fun. It’s a sport played by people of all ages and if you’re looking for recreational play, these clinics are still not a bad idea. With school courts being occupied by tennis teams, it’s difficult to find time to play without having access to a private court. If you’re worried about the conditioning, there’s no need to have access to a tennis court for that. Clinics are made to teach or brush up on tennis techniques.

“I was fresh to tennis my freshman year and I wasn’t good at all. I had a lot of trouble with basic strokes and strategies and I would get frustrated easily. I played a lot of Doubles and I felt bad because I thought that I was a big disappointment to my partner. After the season was over, I went to clinics and the one on one training was a big help because now I have [racquet] swings that are personal to me” said Kang.

If you’re interested in signing up, it’s important to sign up as soon as possible. These tennis clubs offer permanent court time to all of their clients, so the limited tennis courts get filled fast. However, solo lessons are available at a higher price, and courts will be open for those. Creve Coeur Racquet Club, Forest Lake Tennis Club, and Frontenac Racquet Club all have signing applications on their website. If you’d like advice on which clinic is best for your skill level, contacting Ron Lefcoart would be a good idea.

“Hopefully students will take advantages of these opportunities because both boys and girls tennis teams lost a lot of seniors last year and this year, too. You don’t have to stick with a clinic forever, just until you feel comfortable with techniques. All school tennis teams will have beginning players, so joining a clinic will mean that you’ll be a level above them and everyone knows that it feels good to win.” said Lefcoart.
