North High Students Share How They Plan To Spend Thanksgiving
Turkey, ham, pumpkin pie, macaroni, and a variety of other foods. People throughout the country celebrated Thanksgiving on Nov. 23 in different ways but two things remained consistent: food and family.
“I celebrate Thanksgiving with my family by cooking a bunch of food and meeting up at a family member’s house,” said senior Domani Kiefer.
Most families follow family traditions that have been passed down and may combine traditions from other cultures as well as the typical American fare.
“With my family tradition, because I’m born from American Samoa, it’s totally different. We have a feast where we roast a pig and then we season the big pig. We have a lot of family members come over. It’s usually like a big feast of usually forty people. My step-dad is from St.louis so we also combine his family tradition with my mom’s side,” said senior Esther Sailele.
Since Thanksgiving is a time for people to give thanks for what they have, many families share their food and love for each other. It is a reminder to not take things for granted.
“I’m thankful for my family and my blessings – all the things they went through for me. They help me with school. I’m really thankful because at this time around the holidays for having them on my side because their the only people who can get me through school and everything,” said Sailele.
Besides being thankful for food and family, some people are also thankful for sales. One tradition some families share in is shopping on Black Friday which follows Thanksgiving. This year, some stores opened as early as 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving day with big discounts and deals.
“I went Black Friday shopping with my family. I got my nephew a truck. I bought myself some Beats, clothes, Uggs, and I went Dick’s Sporting Goods and got me some North Face jackets,” said junior Zahria Wilkes.
Since Thanksgiving day has many things going on throughout the day, people tend to have a favorite part about the holiday.
“My favorite part of Thanksgiving is coming together with my family and spending time and eating a meal together,” said Kiefer.
